744 Harrison Street

San Francisco

Filling an envelope with plan dimensions of 25 x 160 feet to a height of 85 feet offers an unusual architectural opportunity.  744 Harrison is an ideal hotel site, located only a few blocks from the San Francisco Convention Center.  The site is bounded by three streets offering exposure on all three sides.

Our tall, skinny hotel proposal is clad with a sheer perforated metal skin.  Every hotel room has a Juliet Balcony open to the outside through an aperture in the metal cladding and a large window behind the screen acting as an exterior shade.    Three slightly different perforation patterns are employed; where shading is needed most, the hole-pattern is less open.  The result is natural ventilation and energy efficiency.  The appearance of the building will vary depending on how light strikes the façade during the day and the pattern of how rooms are illuminated from within at night.
